What are BHA and BHT and why are my pets Food

Although widely used by food manufacturers, despite the existence of safe alternatives are available, studies show BHA and BHT are carcinogenic. The FDA considers these additives of course, but the World International Health Research on Cancer considers BHA a possible carcinogen and is considered as such by the State of California.

Studies dating from 1974 have shown that BHA and BHT increase the risk of cancer, accumulate in the tissues of the body, cause liver enlargement and may slow the speed DNA synthesis and cell growth. The fact that BHA and BHT accumulate in body tissues is of particular importance to the health of our pets, as they tend to eat the same diet day after day. Dr. Janet Starr Hull, believes that BHA and BHT are unnecessary additives in our food and should be avoided because they can cause cancer.

In addition to the physical health risks, many animal behaviorists, veterinarians and animal trainers believe there is a direct relationship between food additives and Food and behavioral problems (John Fisher, 2003). Although no studies have been performed in this field, it is important anecdotal evidence that this is true in many cases. There are several food manufacturers with the support of Nutrition experts also believe that pet food should be free to BHA and BHT.
